  1. whooping cough, or pertussis Acute infectious
  2. disease, seen mainly in children, caused by
  3. colonization of the air passages by the
  4. bacterium Bordetella pertussis. There may be
  5. catarrh, mild fever, and loss of appetite,
  6. but the main symptom is violent coughing,
  7. associated with the sharp intake of breath
  8. that is the characteristic `whoop', and often
  9. followed by vomiting and severe nose bleeds.
  10. The cough may persist for weeks. Although
  11. debilitating, the disease is seldom serious
  12. in older children, but infants are at risk
  13. both from the illness itself and from
  14. susceptibility to other conditions, such as
  15. pneumonia. Immunization lessens the incidence
  16. and severity of whooping cough.
